Council Member Carolyn King Arnold’s District 4 has racked up the most Dallas code violations so far this year.

According to the City of Dallas code compliance performance dashboard, District 4 clocked 3,629 violations as of February 17. The dashboard tracks various code violations, which include:

  • Litter on private property, alley, or parkway
  • Brush/bulky trash out too early
  • Accessory outside storage violation
  • Litter on vacant lots and commercial properties
  • Illegal land use

As previously reported by The Dallas Express, polling indicates that residents are generally upset with “the amount of trash, litter, or junk” in their neighborhoods and “elsewhere in the City of Dallas.”

The most common violation cited in District 4 has been litter on private property, alley, or parkway, with 595 incidents documented, followed by bulky trash with 401 violations, outside storage at 375, and litter on vacant lots at 249.

So far this year, a total of 1,318 service requests have been filed for potential violations in District 4, which is located in southern Dallas. Only 922 have been closed, leaving 396 open requests.

In response to the City’s seeming inability to effectively enforce code compliance and keep Dallas clean, local groups and residents have been organizing clean-up events. The Metroplex Civic & Business Association (MCBA), for instance, launched its own adopt-a-block-type program.

“If the City is not taking charge of this [and] keeping our roads and streets and sidewalks clean … it’s our community, it’s our responsibility at the end of the day,” MCBA CEO Louis Darrouzet said in a previous interview with The Dallas Express.

In total, some 22,439 code violations have been logged citywide this year.
