A person was shot at in Haltom City on February 18 after meeting someone to buy “expensive jeans” from an ad on OfferUp.

The victim was shot at when they attempted to leave the meetup location after deciding not to purchase the jeans.

According to Haltom Police, the incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 5600 Block of Coventry Park Drive.

Police said the potential buyer was “initially suspicious” due to the time of night but proceeded to meet the seller anyway.

The victim told officers that the jeans “were not as described” and opted not to purchase them.

As they were driving away, the suspect fired at the individual’s car.

A bullet struck them, but it “lost enough velocity” that it became lodged in the victim’s jacket, leaving only a bruise.

No arrests have been made.

In a news release, the Haltom City Police Department said, “We want to remind everyone that buying and selling online has potential and sometimes significant risk. Take precautions to ensure your safety and pay attention to clues that the seller or buyer may have other intentions.”

When meeting to buy and sell items, police suggest choosing a busy time of day and a well-lit, monitored public location like a grocery store.
