Comedian and commentator turned school board candidate Alex Stein claimed he was barred from a Dallas Morning News school board candidate forum interview for the simple request of wanting to record his appearance.
Stein told The Dallas Express that, upon his request to record his appearance with interviewers, the Dallas Morning News staff made him leave the forum.
“Of course, it’s The Dallas Morning News. The most liberal-leaning, fake-news rag in the Metroplex. So I was like, ‘Well, I’ll just record it on my cellphone.’ So I brought my cellphone up to record it. As soon as I walked in there, they wanted an excuse to kick me out.”
“All they had to do was let me put my phone there. They were recording it, so it seemed really hypocritical. … We couldn’t even really talk about it or figure out a way to get a copy of their recording of it. They just told me, ‘You gotta go.'”
Stein, who is standing for election in Highland Park ISD’s Trustee Place 6 race, claimed The Dallas Morning News exhibited political bias.
“I didn’t want to give them an opportunity [to exhibit bias]. Do I know what their motivations were? No. But The Dallas Morning News isn’t favorable with me. Everybody knows that they have a political bias. The idea I was going to go in there and get a favorable recommendation is laughable.”
Despite the alleged bias, Stein said conflict with Dallas’ establishment press would not stop him from promoting his vision for education reform.
“The Highland Park school board has become a disgrace. I mean, the standardized test scores for all of the elementary are at basically the lowest levels they’ve been at in years. Our entire board votes in unison on everything, and nobody ever tries to shake things up. I want to go in there and shake things up like a Fanta soda. I’m not just gonna vote for the status quo.”
The general election for Highland Park ISD School Trustee Place 6 is May 6.
