North Texas Food Bank has partnered with DoorDash in the Project DASH Initiative to provide meals for senior residents who are unable to leave their homes.

The endeavor seeks to provide food boxes to seniors living in Dallas, Navarro, Hunt, and Hopkins Counties within the 75234, 75110, 75212, 75428, 75482, 75134, and 75048 zip codes. The seniors must also meet governmental income guidelines to be beneficiaries of the initiative and have groceries delivered to their homes once every month.

The program serves approximately 900 seniors across North Texas, with more applications every day.

The initiative was formed amidst the current spike in inflation that has, in part, caused the cost of gas, food, and necessities to increase.

“Your food prices at the grocery store, your gas, all of those types of things have gone up for everybody,” Jacob Taylor, the director of operations at Sharing Life Community Outreach, said. “But when you’re a senior, you’re on that fixed income, and that’s not going to change.”

Mesquite resident Gloria Rodriguez, who has stage four cancer, said inflation has made a lot of things unaffordable for her as she only lives off her SSI check.

“It means a lot because being the way I am, sick, you know, it’s hard for me to go outside and wait and all that,” Rodriguez added.

Project DASH is funded through government, private partnerships, and community donations.

DoorDash also covers the cost of delivering the food boxes to the seniors.
