Residents across the Dallas-Fort Worth area are preparing for a potential winter storm this weekend.

Snow, sleet, and freezing rain are set to hit the DFW area from January 23 to 25. Officials with the National Weather Service-Fort Worth warned that “widespread wintry weather” would affect travel and infrastructure.

“Plan ahead for travel impacts & power outages, and monitor forecasts in the coming days,” NWS-Fort Worth officials posted on X.

NWS-Fort Worth officials warned this storm will bring prolonged temperatures below freezing, with “dangerous cold temperatures Saturday night.”

“We’re talking lows in the single digits to mid teens,” they posted. “Many locations won’t get above freezing until Monday.”

Officials warned residents to monitor forecasts, find their water shutoff valve, and protect the “4 Ps”: People, pets, plants, and pipes.

In the north, from Cisco to Paris, the wintry mix could start as early as noon Friday, but more likely 5 p.m. Then south, across the DFW metroplex, it could start as early as 4 p.m., but more likely 9 p.m. From Killeen to Canton, it could start as early as 7 p.m., but is more likely to start at 12 a.m. January 24. Further south, over Palestine, it could start as early as 9 p.m., but more likely 3 a.m.

In the north, from Graham to Paris, meteorologists are predicting some initial freezing rain, but mostly sleet and snow. Further south, from Cisco to DFW to Canton, they are expecting sleet and freezing rain ending with some snow. Finally, from Killeen to Palestine, they are expecting mostly freezing rain and some sleet – with ice building up on trees and power lines.

“With the possibility of potentially disruptive winter weather impacts to Texas, pay attention to the forecast over the next several days,” officials with the Texas Department of Emergency Management said.

Meteorologists are predicting this storm will sweep across almost the entire Southeast, hitting states from Texas to Virginia with ice and heavy snow.

TDEM officials recommended residents put together plans and emergency kits.

When freezing temperatures approached earlier in January, Dallas opened emergency shelters for homeless people across the city, as The Dallas Express reported at the time.

Officials with the Electric Reliability Council of Texas claim the state’s electric grid is ready for the upcoming storm, as The Dallas Express also reported.

Winter Storm Uri hit in February 2021, taking out power for millions of residents for days, damaging property across the state, and killing more than 200 people. Since then, ERCOT has adopted a contingency reserve system and scheduled maintenance periods aiming to avert another statewide disaster.
