Dallas residents are once again speaking out over the prevalence of porch pirates despite utilizing cameras to catch criminals in the act.
A Dallas resident posted on the Ring Neighborhood application to highlight the extent of the issues, writing in the post, which included the video, that it was “Another video of porch pirate on Avalon early Monday morning.”
In the video, a woman wearing yellow shorts, a black jacket, and a hat can be seen walking up the porch before seemingly taking a package that was waiting for the resident.
Many residents asked whether the resident was able to file a police report about the incident.
“So sorry. Were you able to get the license plate information to the police?” wrote one commenter.
“That’s awful ~ I hope you have police info?” another asked.
However, these reports could do little to lead to a solution, as various residents have reportedly been unable to receive assistance from the Dallas Police Department (DPD).
As previously reported by The Dallas Express, posts on the Ring Neighborhood application have pointed out the rise in porch piracy and the low number of fixes, with some residents suggesting Amazon lockers or P.O. boxes due to the lack of solutions by the DPD.
Many have suggested that this lack of action by the department stems from a shortage of available police officers, as the city has still failed to meet the requirements outlined in Proposition U, which was passed by city residents in 2024 and mandates the city to meet minimum standards for police officer numbers and compensation.
Another commenter recommended filling a fake package with something unsavory, noting that this could help deter porch pirates in the future.
“Package theft is now as common as dirt. Everyone should start putting out bait packages filled with dog poop or something similar. If the thieves keep getting this stuff this will reduce the thefts.”
This suggestion has actually become more frequent throughout the area as porch piracy continues to be prevalent, with one Denton resident recently filling a package with sour kitty litter to ward off these alleged criminals, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.
