The Double Oak Police Department announced that it had lost another officer to COVID-19.

Officer Lonnie Sneed died on February 15 following a battle with COVID-19, according to the announcement on the Double Oak Police Department’s Facebook page.

According to Double Oak PD, Sneed has been with the department since August 2016. Before joining Double Oak PD, he had previously served at the Springtown Police Department and Rhome Police Department.

According to Double Oak PD, Sneed was 50-years-old and is survived by his five children and wife of over 20 years.

Sneed is the second officer from Double Oak PD to die of COVID-19 in February. Officer John Mestas died on February 7 after he also battled the virus. 

In 15 years, Mestas served several police departments and law enforcement agencies in North Texas, including Hillsboro Police Department, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, Tarrant County Hospital District Police Department, and Somervell County Sheriff’s Office. 

According to the Double Oak PD, Mestas is also a veteran of the United States Army and the United States Air Force Reserves. He was 45 years old at the time of his death.

The Double Oak PD asks the general public to keep the family of both officers and the entire police community in their prayers.

Mestas’ funeral arrangements include a Visitation/Rosary, held on February 22 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Skyvue Memorial Gardens Funeral Home located at 7220 Rendon Bloodworth Rd in Mansfield. His funeral will be held at Saint Ann Catholic Church in Burleson, located at 100 SW Alsbury Blvd., at 10 a.m February 23.

A campaign to raise funds for the families of both men was launched on GoFundMe and has reached $23,660 of its intended $30,000 goal as of February 18.
