The Dallas Police and Fire Associations have come together to sue the city over agreed-upon first responder pay increases they allege are delayed unfairly.
According to the plaintiffs, the City of Dallas has breached a signed agreement from 2019 that negotiated the first responder pay increases was supposed to ensure that first responder salaries would compare to other cities closely in size to Dallas.
According to The Dallas Observer, the city pushed back the raises to a later time due to the pandemic. A clause in the agreement states that because of factors like revenue shortfalls, “the city manager may not be able to recommend or continue full implementation of the market-based pay structure at any time or periods of time during the term of this agreement.”
Some first responders were told they will have to wait until the start of the fiscal year or their anniversary date for their increased pay, which is arguably later than what was included in the agreement.
Mike Mata, the president of the Dallas Police Association, stated, “We’re not asking for anything more than what was agreed in the contract.”Â
