Dallas’ Development Services Department warned customers Friday of an attempted phishing scheme targeting their personal information.

“If you have received an email that looks like it’s from Development Services asking you to verify personal information via a link — DO NOT CLICK THE LINK! This email is a phishing attempt to gather your personal information,” the department said in a Facebook post on Friday.

According to DSD, the department will never ask customers for their personal information via email link. Instead, the department only communicates with its customers through their preferred communication channel, whether in-person, on the phone, or by email, a DSD representative told The Dallas Express.

The City of Dallas is no stranger to cyber security threats. In May 2023, the City was hit by a ransomware attack that impacted multiple City services, including DSD’s permitting operations, which suffered significant delays, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.

Despite City Manager T.C. Broadnax repeatedly claiming that no customer information was compromised in last year’s ransomware attack, he later admitted that hackers stole the personal data of City employees.

Broadnax’s failure to protect employee data drew criticism from the Dallas Fire Fighters Association (DFFA).

“Don’t know how long this council will tolerate his behavior and arrogance… Time to pack up and go Mr. Broadnax,” said DFFA in a post on X last August following the revelation that employee data was compromised.

After less than a year, DFFA finally got their wish, with Broadnax announcing his resignation effective June 3, 2024, The Dallas Express reported.

To avoid a repeat of last year, DSD wants to ensure customers are protected from any and all phishing attempts. For further information, contact DSD.
