Authorities announced that a pedestrian was killed while traversing a Dallas road Friday night.
The victim, who has not been publicly identified yet, was reportedly hit twice while trying to walk across a major thoroughfare. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, according to NBC 5 DFW.
The incident occurred near the intersection of John West Road and North Buckner Boulevard in eastern Dallas at around 7:30 p.m.
Dallas police told NBC 5 that a woman was attempting to cross Buckner when she was struck by an SUV after she stepped off the curb in the vicinity of a divided median. There was no crosswalk where she tried to cross. She was reportedly thrown into the air upon impact and was hit a second time by a different SUV. The drivers of both vehicles stayed at the scene and waited for the police.
As previously reported by The Dallas Express, some 661 pedestrians were injured in traffic accidents in Dallas last year, and 69 were killed, marking a 4.2% uptick in pedestrian incidents from 2022, according to data from the Texas Department of Transportation.
In a bid to mitigate some of the roadway hazards for pedestrians, the City of Dallas is planning on spending $27 million of taxpayer money on roadway and pedestrian safety initiatives in southern Dallas.
“I am extremely proud of this award and what this project will do for the surrounding community and pedestrian safety,” said City Manager T.C. Broadnax.
Most of the money will come from a $21.8 million grant the City received from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The City will kick in $5.25 million from its own coffers.
