A Plano-based nonprofit is hosting an event to support the area foster care community.

The event by the Local Good Center aims to teach its attendees about the resources available and the steps they need to take to support and care for foster children, teens, and their families.

The Local Good Center’s advocacy director, Jennifer Creech, said Dallas and Collin counties have more than 1,000 children in foster care. She further explained that people can give assistance to those children outside of becoming a foster parent.

“People think becoming a foster parent is the only way to support these kids, but that’s not true,” Creech said. “No matter your age, background, relationship, or financial status, there is a way for everyone to care for the foster community.”

Jeff Jones, the senior pastor at Chase Oaks Church, also supports the cause. “While many of us are aware of the need surrounding foster children and families, figuring out how to help can feel paralyzing. The good news is that there’s something we can all do to help others flourish, and we don’t have to do it alone,” he said.

Families, groups, and individuals are invited to participate in the program. The level of support each individual or group gives can range from short to long term, depending on which options work better for them.

The event is scheduled to be held at 2201 K Ave. in Plano on July 27 at 7 p.m. The program will feature a panel discussion with local agencies’ representatives.

Guest panel speakers include Alexandra Nameth of CK Family Services, Debi Williams of CASA of Collin County, and Haley Conner of Embrace Texas. The three panelists will cover various related topics, including ways to provide relief to foster families and why community involvement is essential. They will also answer questions regarding how one can best support foster families and those foster children who have reached the age at which they have outgrown the system.

The Local Good Center organizers of the event say it is a family-friendly affair. Refreshments will be served.
