A woman and child are dead after walking away from a car crash only to be struck by another vehicle on the east side of Mesquite, as reported by Fox 4 News.

The accident occurred around 11 p.m. on February 28, on an Interstate 20 bridge near Farm Road 741.

Jennifer Young’s BMW collided with a Nissan Sentra before her car stalled in the middle of the freeway. The other motorist’s car became entangled in a steel cable barrier.

Young, 30, and her 3-year-old son survived the initial accident. However, when they exited their vehicle and tried to get off of the highway, a Nissan Altima that could not stop in time struck the BMW and both victims.

A Freightliner truck hit the BMW as well.

The mother and child were pronounced dead at the scene.

No one else was injured in the accidents.

While investigating the crash, all lanes headed westbound on Interstate 20 were closed overnight. The highway reopened shortly after 7 a.m.
