A 49-year-old father and his 9-year-old daughter were located safe on February 14 in Coahuila, Mexico, more than two weeks after they were reported missing.
Hector and Luna Flores were last seen on January 28 as they traveled from Fort Stockton to Big Bend National Park in Texas.
On February 5, the father’s abandoned truck was discovered near the northern end of the remote Old Ore Road, with their personal belongings inside, and it was believed that they were traveling on foot.
The National Park Service, U.S. Border Patrol, and Mexico State Police began searching for the pair in the area, with hiking teams and drivers on backcountry roads and aircraft.
In Mexico, residents alerted the National Park Service (NPS) on February 13 that two individuals matching the descriptions of Hector and Luna were spotted in a remote Mexican community across the Rio Grande trying to buy food.
Mexico State Police located them and confirmed their identities on Monday.
Both appeared to be in healthy conditions and were returned to their family.
An investigation is ongoing.
