After fires burned numerous historic buildings in Eastland County’s downtown Ranger last week, a man was detained on suspicion of arson over the weekend.
Ranger Police arrested Robert James on March 19 on five counts of arson, a state jail felony.
On its Facebook page, the City of Ranger Police Department stated it initiated an investigation on March 17, determined the fire’s origin, and issued warrants for the suspect in question.Â
The report made by the RPD indicated that the fire was set in the 400 block of South Marston Street. Due to the strong winds in the area, flames spread to four other locations, destroying multiple properties, including a 103-year-old church building.Â
While police say the fire was initially thought to be an accidental wildfire that spread from a barbecue pit, they now believe it may have been started deliberately.
The investigation is still ongoing.
James is currently being held on a $100,000 bond, and it is not clear if he has an attorney.
It is important to note that the Ranger fire is separate from the complex fires that started on March 17.Â

Over the last seven days, 178 wildfires burned 108,493 acres across Texas.
Several emergency workers have stepped in to assist those affected by the fires. Eastland County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Sgt. Barbara Fenley lost her life on March 17 after helping residents to safety.Â
In its Facebook post, the City of Ranger Police Department expressed appreciation for the first responders who helped put out the Ranger fire and volunteers who selflessly donated water and food.
