Dallas police have arrested a 24-year-old man in connection to the murder of his girlfriend’s stepfather at a Red Bird apartment on January 26.
As previously reported by The Dallas Express, Dallas police officers were called to the scene of the murder at about 6 p.m. on January 13. The incident occurred at an apartment complex in the 8000 block of West Virginia Drive, near West Wheatland Road and U.S. Highway 67.
Responding officers found the victim, Mikel Ford, 47, with a gunshot wound. Ford was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
According to an arrest warrant, Dallas police have now arrested Rodger Christopher Harris on suspicion of shooting Ford during an argument in the apartment.
According to the affidavit, Ford’s stepdaughter told police that the 47-year-old came to her bedroom on the night of the shooting and told Harris that he needed to provide more for the couple’s child.
The stepdaughter told investigators that both men started arguing as she stood between them. She added that Ford had clenched his fist as if he was going to punch Harris before Harris pulled out a handgun and shot at Ford three times, according to the affidavit.
The stepdaughter told police that the suspect fled the scene while she grabbed a towel and tried to help Ford.
According to the affidavit, the stepdaughter ran out of the apartment to tell her aunt about the shooting. The aunt called the police and told them she had seen Ford bleeding on the ground.
The affidavit further detailed that the aunt said Ford told her as he lay on the floor that “Chris shot me.” The aunt and the stepdaughter identified Harris by the picture on his driver’s license.
Harris was arrested and booked into the Dallas County jail on January 26. A judge denied him bond, according to court records.
