One of Dallas Love Field’s two runways will be closed for nearly three months while construction crews make safety upgrades.

The airport urges flyers to be prepared for possible flight delays during construction, which began Monday and is projected to continue through October 29.

The enhancements will include new grading and drainage infrastructure along Taxiway A, as well as the installation of a new LED lighting system. The regrading of the runway is necessary to meet current FAA regulatory requirements, according to a statement from Dallas Love Field (DAL).

The project was thoroughly studied and approved by the FAA, the Department of Aviation, consultants, and airlines.

“We are committed to ensuring the highest safety and efficiency standards at Dallas Love Field, and these improvements are a vital part of that commitment,” said Patrick Carreno, director of the Department of Aviation.

Residents who live near the airport may experience an increase in noise during the construction process.

Dallas Love Field is the busiest medium-sized hub airport in the U.S., averaging around 200 departures each day. It accommodates more than 600,000 passengers each month flying on Southwest, Delta, and Alaska Airlines.

Last year, DAL won several awards related to its 10-month project of improvements and upgrades to Taxiway C, in addition to awards for airport service quality, customer experience programs, and special events.
