A Celina resident is grateful to neighbors and local firefighters who helped keep his home safe from a blazing fire on January 30.

Just after 5 p.m. on Sunday, January 30, Celina firefighters were called to the scene of a large fire in the 2800 block of Field Street.

Two new homes still under construction were in flames. The two unoccupied houses were destroyed, but firefighters worked to contain the fire before it could spread to any other structures nearby.

Jeff Hershberger, who lives close to the homes that caught fire, said many of his neighbors rushed to help the first responders.

He told CBS 11 News, “I am still overcome with adrenaline and emotion that you would not even hesitate to come help. It also goes without saying that I am also forever grateful to the Celina Fire Department for their great job battling and putting out the fires as well.”

He also added he was thankful that the fire did not cause much damage to his home. “The heat was so bad that we lost windows on the back of our house. The fence between us is totally gone, and there are scorch marks in the dry grass, and had those brave neighbors not been here, it could have been tragically worse,” he said.

The severity of the heat caused a grass fire to ignite at the north end of the Bluewood subdivision just south of the Collin College campus.

No injuries were reported. An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
