Drivers will encounter lane closures on I-35E in Dallas this weekend in conjunction with overhead bridge construction, as reported by WFAA News.

The nightly closures will affect the southbound lanes of I-35E lanes between Trinity River and Marsalis Avenue between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.

The construction work will take place in the overnight hours of April 2 and 3, with all southbound traffic routed to the southbound frontage road during that time. Regular traffic flow will resume at 6:00 a.m. on April 4.

The construction work is the latest stage of the $666 million Southern Gateway Project, which encompasses 11 miles along I-35E.

The project, which began in early 2018, will alleviate traffic congestion, improve safety and system linkage, support traffic operations, and address road inefficiencies.

Work is expected to be completed this summer for that particular stretch of road known as one of the most congested roads in Texas. An estimated 192,000 vehicles per day travel through southern Dallas County.

The project will reconstruct the general purpose lanes and non-toll express lanes along I-35 south of downtown.

The Southern Gateway Project also includes building structural elements to support a future planned deck plaza above the freeway between Ewing and Marsalis Avenues.

Officials from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) warn that construction stoppages due to unforeseen circumstances or inclement weather could occur.

Drivers can sign up for text alerts on the status of construction by sending the message “The Southern Gateway” to 855-533-1248.
