A historic building in North Texas is slated for demolition before the year ends.
The building, located at 2424 Swiss Ave. in Dallas, is set to be demolished in the coming weeks. The 104-year-old structure was once home to the Lizard Lounge, a beloved music venue that shut its doors five years ago. The building, erected in 1920, has been listed as sold according to a profile on ReMax.
“RIP to Lizard Lounge! Can’t believe it is getting torn down,” Melissa Zarate, a social media user, posted on X.
The Lizard Lounge would host weekly DJs and EDM artists during its nearly three-decade existence. The iconic club shut its doors in May 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns and never reopened.
Former owner Don Nedler said at the time that the cost to maintain the business during the shutdown was too high. According to the Dallas County Appraisal District, the century-old building is now owned by Westdale Properties.
“With heavy hearts, It has come to our attention that the beloved former property of 2424 Swiss Avenue (@thelizardlounge )has been sold to a developer and is now scheduled for imminent demolition. We expect this to take place in the next few weeks. If you wish to pay your last respects, now is the time,” wrote Dallas-based music events company Next Level Events on Instagram.
Before it was the Lizard Lounge, the Swiss Avenue property was home to a gothic nightclub called The Church. The club continues to operate at its new location, the It’ll Do Club, at 4322 Elm St.
“I spent many nights here dancing from Thursday to Sunday for YEARS. I spent my entire night on the floor dancing without a care in the world. My bestie at the time introduced me to techno and the lounge and that’s all she wrote. I was a dedicated fan. I’m going to come by to say goodbye,” wrote Teresa Kaiser on Facebook in reaction to the news of the upcoming demolition.
