Construction is set to start soon on the massive Harold Simmons Park revitalization project that will reshape the heart of Dallas.

In October, The Dallas Express reported that demolition had begun to prepare the site for the estimated $325 million park upgrade. Now, the next stage is set to focus on the flagship entrance, the 22-acre West Overlook.

“Imagine a place where wellness meets nature. Harold Simmons Park is being crafted to be your personal retreat, offering tranquil spaces and revitalizing experiences,” the Harold Simmons Park account posted on X on March 24.

The Trinity Park Conservancy, the Trinity River Corridor Local Government Corp., and others plan to break ground on April 8. The West Overlook will eventually house filter gardens, an interactive water-play section, and a skate and bike park. This initial phase could take roughly three years to complete.

The wider project will eventually see enhancements to the Felix Lozada Gateway as well. According to the project website, this section is getting “4 state-of-the-art sports courts” that can be used for basketball, futsal, pickleball, and other activities. The gateway will also see the construction of a 68,000-foot roller skating rink, complete with music and lighting.

The ambitious Harold Simmons Park project is expected to generate roughly 600 construction jobs. Once complete, 260 permanent jobs are also anticipated.

The park is forecast to welcome around four million visitors annually, generating a $7 billion economic impact over the coming three decades. According to the committee overseeing the initiative, the project is also set to create $2.7 billion in new real estate development.

Michael Van Valkenburg Associates, Lake|Flato Architects, and Wenerfield have been hired to design different park elements.

Since much of the park sits on flood-prone land, the Army Corps of Engineers continues to work on improving the Trinity River Floodway and the city’s levees. Until the necessary improvements are completed, park upgrades will focus on the overlook areas.
