The Grand Prairie Police Department has revealed that its officers shot and injured a man on Saturday, Oct. 16, after he struck two police cars that had been chasing him.

Grand Prairie police received a call about an intoxicated driver about 9 a.m. The responding officers tried to pull the driver over on the Texas 161 service road near Arkansas Lane.

The driver, who Grand Prairie police identified as 58-year-old Terry Darnell, allegedly refused to pull over and led the officers on a slow-speed pursuit while traveling northbound on President George Bush Turnpike.

According to Grand Prairie Police, Darnell’s vehicle exited on West Marshall Drive and briefly stopped. The Grand Prairie PD said Darnell later accelerated and hit two police cars that officers occupied. Police said the impact of Darnell’s car on the police cars pushed one of them through a fence.

According to the Grand Prairie PD, other officers chasing Darnell opened fire on the 58-year-old, injuring him on the wrist. Police said Darnell, who was operating a pickup truck, surrendered to Grand Prairie officers following several minutes of negotiations.

Police said Darnell was later transferred to a hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries. Police said one of the officers whose vehicle was struck by Darnell’s was also taken to a hospital for minor injuries.

Grand Prairie Police did not disclose how many officers opened fire on Darnell.

The incident is being investigated by the Dallas County district attorney’s office and the Grand Prairie PD Office of Professional Standards. Darnell is currently facing charges of aggravated assault against a public servant.
