Texas Gov. Greg Abbott received the “Back the Blue” Award at the Dallas Police Department’s Assist the Officer Foundation’s 32nd annual Cops’ Cop banquet.
The recognition honored his support for law enforcement initiatives.
The award comes as Abbott champions stricter bail reform laws aimed at keeping violent criminals behind bars. Texas lawmakers passed what Abbott calls the strongest bail reform package in state history during the last legislative session.
“States and communities need law enforcement and leaders who are committed to the cause of public safety,” Abbott told the gathering. “You represent the very best of our great state, and Texas is better today because of what you do every day.”
The governor emphasized his commitment to supporting police officers across Texas.
“I just want you to know you have a governor who has your back, and together, we will keep Texas safe and secure,” Abbott said.
Foundation Chairman and Dallas Police Department Sergeant Ed Lujan attended the event alongside Officer James Parnell and other law enforcement leaders.
Abbott highlighted recent legislation designed to end what he described as a revolving door for violent criminals. The new laws strengthen bail requirements and aim to prevent repeat offenders from quickly returning to the streets.
The annual banquet honors Dallas police officers and recognizes community leaders who support law enforcement. The Assist the Officer Foundation provides financial assistance to officers and their families during times of need.
