Formal search-and-rescue operations have ended for Southern Methodist University law professor Charles Hosch, who has been missing for more than a week after setting out on a hike in northern Georgia, authorities said.

Hosch, 67, was last seen in Union County, roughly two hours north of Atlanta. Family members said he was hiking a section of the Appalachian Trail, a route he knew well and had completed in the past.

Hosch’s law firm said Monday marked the final day of formal search-and-rescue efforts. Local authorities have not issued additional updates on the investigation, though family and friends continue to hope for answers.

Hosch is described as a devoted father and new grandfather, as well as a Harvard Law School graduate and longtime instructor at SMU’s Dedman School of Law. His firm has called him a “brilliant legal mind” who has mentored students for more than 30 years.

Anyone who has information about Hosch’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Union County Emergency Operations Center at 706-439-6091 or dial 911.
