Dallas City Council Member Adam Bazaldua is advocating for gun restrictions in the aftermath of the shooting at the State Fair of Texas over the weekend.
Bazaldua, who presides over District 7, gave a brief update on the situation and proceeded to criticize gun laws in Texas in a social media post on Saturday.
“It’s one thing to have a right to bear arms, it’s another to have legislation, like permit-less carry, that makes it easier for senseless acts of gun violence like this to be carried out in our state. I wish our Republican friends in Austin would pass meaningful gun legislation to help our constituents feel safe in public,” Bazaldua posted on X, formerly Twitter.
Bazaldua’s remarks on the situation were also met with criticism from those commenting on his post.
David Peurifoy commented on the post, saying, “Once again, the cry to punish everyone for the failures of 2 people.”
“Criminals will criminal every time. I’ll bet the more details we find out about this incident, the less surprised we will be,” he added.
Another X user, Erik Elliott, stated that additional gun restrictions would be ineffective since people would obtain the weapons another way.
“You won’t solve “gun violence” by taking firearms away from law abiding citizens. Bad guys will always have the ability to get guns. If an armed guard isn’t stationed at my door, I have the right to protect my fam,” he posted.
Bazaldua was also criticized by users who pointed out the State Fair of Texas rules, which do not allow anyone onto the fairgrounds with a firearm unless they have the proper license.
“The State Fair of Texas has long been, and continues to be, a strong supporter of the rights of responsible gun owning Texans. For that reason, the Fair has long allowed Fair attendees with valid handgun licenses to carry their handguns in a concealed manner while attending the Fair (except for locations prohibited by law),” the Fair explains on its Frequently Asked Questions page.
The discussion regarding gun laws in Texas resurfaced following a shooting that left three people injured and one person in custody.
This incident occurred just before 8 p.m. Saturday and resulted in the evacuation of those who visited the fair, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.
Police took 22-year-old Cameron Turner into custody as the alleged suspected shooter. He has since been charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and is being held at Dallas County jail with a $1.5 million bond for the three charges, as reported by The Dallas Express.
