An early morning fire in South Dallas on Sunday caused significant damage to a home and multiple structures and vehicles, according to a news release.

Dallas Fire-Rescue (DFR) responded to a call about a structural fire at about 2:46 a.m. in the 3700 block of Penelope Street, according to DFR.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, they spotted flames coming from the back of the home, DFR Public Information Officer Jason Evans told The Dallas Express. He confirmed that the fire was extensive and significant.

“When firefighters arrived at the residence, they observed lots of fire coming from the backyard,” Evans told The Dallas Express.

“Firefighters made their way to the back of the home, with hand lines deployed, to find a storage shed completely burned down and fire spreading to the home itself,” Evans added.

He said the flames spread to other structures via a wooden fence. A carport and two vehicles were also damaged in the fire.

The flames also spread to a neighboring home, causing damage on one side, according to DFR.

Neighbors told investigators that the shed was being used as a home, but no one was inside at the time of the fire. It was unclear how many people were living inside the shed, according to DFR.

Firefighters reported that there were no injuries and that everyone made it out of the home safely.

Evans told The Dallas Express that firefighters were able to extinguish the flames fairly quickly.

“Despite the number of things involved, firefighters managed to declare the fire extinguished in about half an hour,” said Evans.

DFR officials believe the fire started in the shed behind the home and are investigating the exact cause of the blaze.
