The Deep Ellum neighborhood of Dallas is ranked as one of the most up-and-coming neighborhoods in the U.S.
The lifestyle publication company, TravelMag, ranked neighborhoods based on its social environment and culture such as cocktail bars, boutiques, coffee houses and dining options.
Deep Ellum offers over 100 restaurants and bars with a wide variety of shopping options, art galleries and music venues.
According to the neighborhood’s website, “The name Deep Ellum derives from the dialects of the people who worked there. At its heart, Deep Ellum was a place where the cultures of the world converged — Blacks, Jews, Greeks, Italians, Mexicans, Czechs, and others, fleeing the oppression of their homelands, looking for a better life.”
The Deep Ellum Texas website notes music has been a vital part of its culture and charm. Deep Ellum was a hub for early jazz and blues musicians. Some of the most iconic and influential musicians such as Blind Lemon Jefferson, Robert Johnson, Huddie “Leadbelly” Ledbetter, Texas Bill Day, Blind Willie Johnson, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Alex Moore and Bessie Smith, ran the music scene in the 1920s.
Aside Deep Ellum’s impressive musical background, the culinary experience is just as impressive. According to TravelMag, “Deep Ellum’s diverse culinary choices range from Hawkers, an eatery inspired by Asian street food stalls, to Terry Black’s BBQ to Local, an upscale mainstay in the Boyd Hotel presenting a la carte options and a multi-course tasting menu with wine pairings. But these few mentions don’t even scratch the surface in terms of cuisine here. Eater deemed Deep Ellum one of Dallas’s best food neighborhoods, so it’s easy to understand its desirability and why Texans and transplants want to settle here.”
