Officials in Dallas have moved to further memorialize first responders who died in the line of duty, opting to install street sign toppers with their names emblazoned.

The sign toppers will include their name and rank, as well as their “End of Watch” date. They will be installed in the neighborhood where the individual first responders lost their lives.

Work on such a program has been in progress for some time now.

“We often say we will never forget our fallen,” Dallas Police Chief Eddie García said in a statement to The Dallas Morning News back in December 2023. “This program is part of this promise.”

A total of 167 Dallas police officers and firefighters will be honored as part of the project.

The program was prompted by the surviving families of first responders who were killed in the line of duty. Many felt that their loved ones were not being sufficiently honored for their sacrifice.

Here is some of what Fox 4 KDFW reported on the development:

Fallen first responders in the City of Dallas will now receive recognition in the communities where they lost their lives.

The families of the first responders killed in the line of duty asked the city to do more to memorialize their loved ones and that will now be possible after a city council vote on Wednesday.

While there are central memorials that honor the names of all fallen firefighters, Dallas City Councilwoman Cara Mendelsohn said many citizens don’t know where those memorials are.

In the case of the memorial to fallen firefighters, it is behind a gate where only firefighters have access.
