A Dallas resident won $1 million after purchasing a Mega Millions ticket matching the five white ball numbers drawn in the June 30 Texas Lottery event.
The ticket also yielded a prize worth $2, bringing the total winnings to $1,000,002 million. The prize winner, who has chosen to remain anonymous, purchased the ticket at Players Café in Austin, per a Texas Lottery news release.
The winning white ball numbers were 13, 22, 47, 51, and 55, with an added gold Mega Ball of 9.
Although unable to claim the full jackpot due to incorrectly guessing the Mega Ball, the player was eligible for the second-tier prize of $1 million for matching the first five white balls.
The Mega Millions game allows players to pick the first five numbers from a field of 70, while the sixth number, considered the Mega Ball, is chosen from a field of 25. The jackpot begins at $20 million and grows each week if there is no winner.
Currently, the Mega Millions jackpot is $500 million after there was no winner in the most recent drawing. The jackpot has continued to grow since the last winner on April 18.
The Mega Millions winner would be able to choose a lump sum cash option of $250 million or the annuitized option that pays the winner annually for 30 years.
The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are just 1 in 302.5 million, and the chance of winning the second-tier prize of $1 million is 1 in 12.6 million.
There are nine ways to win, with prizes ranging from the jackpot to $2. In total, players have a 1 in 24 chance to win a prize in the Mega Millions game, according to Texas Lottery.
Drawings take place every Tuesday and Friday at 10:12 p.m. CT.
Since the Texas Lottery first began in 1992, it has generated $37.1 billion for the state while distributing $81.5 billion worth of prizes to players, per the Texas Lottery news release.
