One of the Dallas police officers who was shot last month in the line of duty has been released from the hospital but has a long journey to recovery ahead, her family reported in an online update.
Senior Corporal Karissa David was shot multiple times in the face and abdomen on August 29 while responding to the call of a fellow officer who was shot while sitting in his patrol car in Oak Cliff. A third officer, Jamie Farmer, was shot by the gunman and wounded in the leg. The first officer, Darron Burks, was pronounced dead at a local hospital, as reported by The Dallas Express.
The gunman, identified as Corey Cobb-Bey, was shot and killed by police following a police chase that ended in Lewisville.
On September 19, the ‘Assist the Officer Foundation’ and ‘Operation BBQ Relief’ held a barbecue fundraiser for Officers David and Farmer at the Dallas Police Association headquarters. In addition, the ‘Assist the Officer Foundation’ is collecting donations directly for Officer David on its website.
Officer David’s family reported on September 19 that she is currently receiving care on an outpatient basis but is scheduled for surgery next week on her jaw and teeth. She also has many more upcoming specialist appointments. The family reported that Officer David is currently blind in both eyes following the shooting, but they are asking for “continued prayers for a miracle in that regards.”
David’s family has set up a GoFundMe account to help with some of her and her family’s ongoing expenses. Expenses include transportation costs for friends and family members participating in her care, transportation to doctor and therapist appointments, household help, food deliveries, pet care, modifications to her home, and technology and devices to help her communicate and accommodate her vision loss.
As of Sunday morning, the GoFundMe account has raised $18,855 of its $25,000 goal.
