The Dallas Police Department has unveiled a new strategy to combat domestic violence in the city.

Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia unveiled the strategy on Monday, Oct.11. The plan will see an increase in the number of domestic violence detectives and a reorganization of the domestic violence unit. The department will also resume visitations to check in on victims and alleged abusers.

Garcia said the issue of domestic violence will always be a priority for his department. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, but Garcia said the strategy is not only about October awareness.

Garcia added that he is hopeful that everyone can see the importance of the strategy and that “this isn’t about necessarily this month.”

Garcia revealed that the Dallas Police Department had been working on the new strategy for months.

“This is about how do we do a better job and how can we ensure that our survivors know that we have their back,” Garcia said.

Dallas police revealed that felony domestic violence assaults went up by fourteen percent in the city last year relative to 2019. The Dallas PD also said that those numbers had not shown any improvements this year.
