The Assistant Chief of Police for the Investigations Bureau at the Dallas Police Department is one of four finalists aiming to be the Tacoma Police Chief.

According to a report by The News Tribune, Avery Moore is vying to become chief of police in Tacoma, Washington, and hopes to bring unity to the department and the community. Moore is also hoping to strengthen the morale of Tacoma PD’s officers.

Moore, 55, is now one of four finalists for the position. The 31-year veteran of the Dallas Police Department had previously overseen Dallas police’s special investigations division and tactical unit. Moore also led about seven-hundred officers of the Dallas PD in the East Patrol Bureau.

While speaking to The News Tribune, Moore described himself as an agent of change who is not new to policing. Moore added that he had been in a leadership position for fifteen years and also an assistant chief at the ninth largest department in the nation.

“Dallas is highly diversified,” Moore told The News Tribune. “Tacoma is diversified, and I know how to navigate that.”

Moore told the Tacoma-based newspaper that his platform is community policing. He believes that no police department can be effective, provide public safety, and reduce crime without the public’s support.

Moore also told The News Tribune that he was proud to have helped implement a three-phase crime plan in Dallas. The plan was implemented in May and starts with actively policing crime hotspots, placing specific investigations where crime is common, and then focused deterrence. Moore added that the plan was “all about reducing victims.”

“Those are the types of things that I would like to bring here,” Moore said.

Following the departure of former Dallas police chief Reneé Hall last year, Moore applied for the city’s top cop position. He also applied for the position of police chief in Austin, TX, and Columbus, Ohio. Moore failed to land any of those positions as those cities hired others to lead their departments.
