Dallas Love Field Airport has taken an innovative step toward sustainability by harnessing jet blast energy to generate electricity.
Partnering with Dallas-based JetWind Power Corporation, the airport has installed turbine pods designed to capture wind created by aircraft during takeoff and taxiing.
This initiative began as a pilot program in 2021, with prototype Energy Capturing Pods (ECPs) placed strategically near the control tower.
These pods convert high-powered jet wind into electricity, which is currently being used to power device-charging stations inside the airport. The pilot’s success led the airport to decide in December 2024 to expand the program, purchasing thirteen additional pods over the next three years.
Each turbine pod can generate enough electricity to power approximately 100 homes annually. Love Field also plans to install six charging stations powered directly by these pods, allowing passengers to charge personal devices with renewable energy.
Since the project’s launch, over 10,000 devices have been charged using energy captured from jet blasts.
Airport officials believe this project sets a precedent for airports worldwide to adopt similar sustainable technologies. As global aviation seeks greener solutions, Love Field’s pioneering approach could serve as a model for reducing carbon footprints in the industry.
With the full installation of 14 pods expected in the coming years, Love Field anticipates a substantial increase in electricity production.
