The Dallas County Republican Party has drafted a resolution to urge Republican state representatives to sign the Contract with Texas.
“The Dallas County Republican Party Executive Committee calls upon Chairman Allen West to formally request all current Dallas County Republican candidates for the Texas House to indicate, by signature, prior to Early Voting for the General Election 2024, whether they approve of and will adhere to the Contract with Texas. If not, candidates and officials should specify the items with which they disagree and provide reasons for their disagreements if they so choose,” the resolution reads.
The Contract with Texas is a commitment by some Republican candidates and lawmakers to make the state house more efficient in passing conservative priorities, the Texas Tribune reports.
The contract has received dozens of signatures from state representatives-elect and current state representatives.
The resolution has come under fire due to a leaked recording of Dallas GOP members allegedly saying that voters shouldn’t vote for any Republican who does not sign the Contract with Texas, conservative website Current Revolt reports.
The controversy led to Republican Party of Texas Chairman Abraham George releasing a statement calling for unity.
“Rep. Morgan Meyer, Rep. Angie Chen Button, and the Dallas County Republican Party must work to find unity on these issues,” the statement read, as reported in Current Revolt.
“Now is not the time to side with Democrats, in any way. We must elect Republicans across the board and make it clear to everyone that we will not let Democrats pick who leads the Texas House next session. The path to unity is clear,” the statement read.
Dallas GOP Chairman Allen West said that he does not believe that the resolution will be brought before the body, Current Revolt reported.
