As holiday festivities ramp up, Dallas County is intensifying its fight against drunk driving through a long-standing DWI task force.

For 40 years, the task force has focused on education, prevention, and enforcement to reduce alcohol-related crashes. Dallas County Commissioner Elba Garcia, who chairs the task force, emphasized the gravity of the issue, noting that alcohol contributed to 2,113 crashes in the county last year, second only to Harris County in DWI-related deaths.

“Drinking is a choice, and if you’re going to drink, don’t drive,” Garcia stated. The task force seeks to raise awareness while maintaining a strong enforcement presence during this busy season. Additional manpower from law enforcement will be deployed to ensure safer roads for Dallas residents.

Local businesses are also stepping up to support the cause. The organization 24HourDallas has partnered with 39 establishments to display QR codes offering $5 discounts on Lyft rides. This initiative is aimed at encouraging partygoers to choose ridesharing over driving under the influence. “Especially during the holidays, businesses with this program will promote safer decisions while contributing to our city’s vibrant nighttime economy,” said Bryan Tony from 24HourDallas.

Statewide, the statistics are alarming. According to TxDOT, alcohol-related crashes occur every 20 minutes in Texas. To combat this, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has launched its “What Alcohol Says” campaign, urging people to plan their transportation before heading out for celebrations. “Take charge of your holiday safety by planning ahead,” said MADD spokesperson Emma Dugas.

For some families, the effects of drunk driving are heartbreakingly personal. Rosaria Saenz, whose daughter was killed by a drunk driver, shared her pain. “All these future memories were robbed from us,” she said, stressing the importance of making responsible choices to prevent similar tragedies.

Dallas County’s efforts are part of a broader movement to ensure safe celebrations without sacrificing lives. From public awareness campaigns to rideshare discounts, the initiatives aim to show that safer alternatives are accessible to all.

The message is clear: Enjoy the holiday season responsibly. With increased police enforcement and community partnerships, Dallas is taking decisive action to prevent drunk driving and its devastating consequences.
