Dallas Central Appraisal District’s new executive director and chief appraiser, Shane Docherty, will begin his role with the turn of the new year, following the retirement of his predecessor, W. Kenneth Nolan.

Nolan served in the field of ad valorem taxation in Texas for a total of 46 years, according to a release from the appraisal district.

On December 13, the Dallas Central Appraisal District Board of Directors appointed Docherty to replace Nolan. Docherty received his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Southern Methodist University before joining the DCAD as a residential field inspector in 1985. Docherty has served as an appraiser for residential and commercial developments and as the director of Appraisal since 2006.

Docherty is also a recipient of the Certified Tax Administer designation from the Institute of Certified Tax Administrators and the Registered Professional Appraiser Designation from the State of Texas.

“Shane Docherty is also currently the Presiding Officer for the Property Tax Professional Advisory Committee for the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation and brings a wealth of knowledge to the position of Executive Director/Chief Appraiser and will continue the excellent service that DCAD provides to all of the taxing jurisdictions and citizens of Dallas County,” the release stated.

The DCAD has had a less-than-stellar year, from fielding cyber attacks to appraisal protests from some public officials. Records from the District indicated that Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson had protested the appraised $1.6 million value of his home in the White Rock Lake area of East Dallas, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.
