Dallas Animal Services is seeking the community’s help in finding foster and permanent homes for animals in its care.
The organization reported on Monday that it is currently way over capacity with animals in its shelter.
“What does it mean for [Dallas Animal Services] to be at 170% capacity? We currently have 510 dogs housed in 300 kennels. This means many of the dogs in our care are in kennels that have been divided in half or are sharing their kennel with a buddy, but this is not sustainable,” said Dallas Animal Services (DAS) in a Facebook post. “We know with the help of our community we can get moving in the right direction again.”
The animal service also reported that it is running low on supplies in its food pantry.
“Almost every day, we see more dogs entering the shelter than we see finding homes.”
DAS took in 137 dogs and 42 cats at its shelter over the past weekend. In addition, 39 dogs and 24 cats were adopted, 15 dogs and two cats were reunited with their owners, 19 dogs and six cats were tagged, and 29 dogs and 23 cats were taken in by those willing to foster.
“Despite finding positive outcomes for 102 dogs, with 137 dogs coming into our shelter this weekend, our intakes are still drastically outpacing our placements. This is an issue shelters across the country are dealing with, but we will not let it stop our efforts to #BeDallas90 and find a positive outcome for 90% of the pets in our care.”
DAS urges anyone who can adopt or foster one of the animals in need to do so. The organization suggests fostering-to-adopt to see if a particular pet is a good fit.
Adoptions are free and can be done without an appointment.
Those interested must be at least 18 years old and provide a photo ID.
