Officials with Dallas Animal Services are asking residents to provide shelter pets with a warm place to stay during the upcoming winter storm.
“A hard freeze is coming to DFW and our shelter pets could use a warm place to land,” shelter officials said on Facebook. “Fostering even for the weekend helps keep dogs safe and comfortable while temperatures drop.”
In North and Central Texas, the National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning from 6 p.m. January 23 to noon, January 25, as The Dallas Express reported. Officials also issued an Extreme Cold Warning from the evening of January 24 to the morning of January 26.
During the storm, DAS will provide all necessary supplies for fostering a pet. Residents can visit the shelter website to sign up, or email [email protected] with any questions.
“Open your home and help us weather the freeze together,” shelter officials said.
The shelter has been using fostering and adoption to address a years-long struggle with overcrowding.
During the upcoming winter storm, Dallas recreation centers and public libraries are opening as warming centers, as The Dallas Express reported. Gov. Greg Abbott activated state emergency resources in advance.
Forecasters expect a shift to sleet and snow late Saturday, with the snow ending by Sunday. Subfreezing conditions will potentially linger until Monday afternoon. Meanwhile, ice buildup on trees and power lines could lead to power outages.
In 2021, Winter Storm Uri knocked out power across the state for days, killing more than 200 people, as The Dallas Express reported. This time, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas claims the grid is ready.
