Dallas County is offering free air conditioning window units for eligible residents to help stay safe in the summer heat.

The county program was announced one day before the metroplex recorded triple-digit temperatures for the first time this summer. According to a release from Dallas County Health and Human Services, the initiative aims to help deliver relief and stave off heat-related illnesses among the county’s most vulnerable residents.

“As we head into the peak of summer, access to cooling is not just a comfort, but a critical health need,” said Dr. Phil Huang, Director of DCHHS, in a press release.
