The City of Garland opened its new $12 million animal shelter on February 11.
The 23,000-square-foot facility, located at 1902 State Highway 66, is more than twice the size of the previous shelter, which had been in service since the 1960s.
The city said in a news release that the new shelter can accommodate up to 224 dogs and 141 cats, along with other animals. The city estimates that it will take in about 6,000 animals every year.
The new state-of-the-art shelter was made possible thanks to a bond program passed in 2019 by the residents of Garland.
