It has been one week since former President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt, and Dallas City Council members still have not commented about the incident.
Another recent review of each council member’s X and Facebook accounts shows no activity related to the historic event. Nor have the council members responded to repeated requests for comment from The Dallas Express.
Mayor Eric Johnson, who delivered a 4-minute speech at the Republican National Convention (RNC) this week, posted twice on X the day of the assassination attempt.
“Praying for former President Trump and grateful for the quick reaction by the Secret Service agents,” he said in the first post.
An hour later, he wrote, “I am relieved that former President Trump is safe. But I am deeply saddened by the reports that a rally attendee was killed. This heinous and despicable violence has no place in our nation.”
Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia told DX in an emailed statement this week that he was “appalled” by the attempt on Trump’s life:
“The violence is unacceptable and has no place in our country. We are grateful former President Trump was not seriously injured. Our hearts are with those injured on Saturday and with the family and friends of Corey Comperatore, who tragically lost his life.”
Following Johnson’s speech about public safety in Dallas and elsewhere at the RNC, Garcia praised the work of the Dallas Police Department in a statement to DX:
“We are fortunate to have the support of our Mayor, Council Members, the City Manager, and our community. I’m proud of our amazing me and women who continue to sacrifice for our city with professionalism and tenacity. As we’re in the middle of our fourth straight year of crime reduction in the City of Dallas, now is not the time to ease up. One victim is too many, and there is still much more work to be done. But this city, this community, and the Dallas Police Department are all in.”
Meanwhile, Trump said during his acceptance speech at the RNC on Thursday night that he “had God on my side,” DX reported.
“I’m not supposed to be here tonight. As Americans, we are bound together by a single fate and a shared destiny. We rise together. Or we fall apart. Despite such a heinous attack, we unite this evening more determined than ever. Our resolve is unbroken, and our purpose is unchanged — to deliver a government that serves the American people.”
RealClear Politics data shows that Trump continues to lead Biden in national polling. On Friday, Trump had a 5-point advantage over the president, who continues to publicly resist growing calls for him to end his re-election campaign.
