Dallas police are on the hunt for a group of carjackers who killed a man while he was out collecting garbage at an apartment in West Oak Cliff.

Dallas police said the victim was with two other people, and all three of them were working for a valet trash collection service when they were attacked late Tuesday.

According to a press release, Dallas police received a call about a shooting at the Grand Estates at Kessler Park Apartments, located at 1520 N. Beckley Avenue near Methodist Dallas Medical Center. Upon arrival, officers of the Dallas PD found the victim, Roberto Escamilla Santoyo, a 26-year-old Latin male, lying on the ground with a gunshot wound.

Dallas police said Santoyo had been shot by one person amongst a group of carjackers during a robbery. Police said one of the men collecting trash with Santayo also sustained injuries by getting “pistol-whipped” from one of the carjackers. The third person escaped the scene unharmed.

Dallas Fire-Rescue responded to the scene and transported the 26-year-old victim and another unidentified adult male to a local hospital.

Police said the 26-year-old victim died at the hospital from injuries sustained from the gunshot. The unidentified adult male was treated for his injuries.

The carjackers drove off in the truck the three trash collectors were working with. Officers found the truck, which was loaded with bags of trash, abandoned about two miles from the location of the shooting.

Police are yet to make an arrest in connection with the shooting, but are actively investigating the crime. The Dallas Police Department’s Homicide Unit is urging anyone with information to contact Detective Boz Rojas at 214-681-1786 or at [email protected].
