Dallas Water Utilities will begin mailing notifications to approximately 225,000 customers whose water service line materials remain unidentified, starting in early October and continuing through November 2025.
The mass mailing complies with federal regulations that require utilities to inventory all service lines and alert customers to potential lead exposure risks.
The notifications direct customers to complete a survey identifying their water service line composition. Recipients can access the questionnaire and upload photos at bit.ly/DWULeadInfo.
The Environmental Protection Agency’s revised Lead and Copper Rule requires public water systems nationwide to develop inventories of service lines connecting water mains to buildings. Systems must notify customers if their lines contain unknown materials, lead, or galvanized components.
Dallas began eliminating lead service lines 47 years ago. The city’s water treatment includes corrosion control methods that prevent lead from leaching into the water system.
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality rates Dallas Water Utilities as “Superior,” its highest designation. DWU water meets or exceeds all state and federal quality requirements.
Federal regulations require utilities to complete inventories and replace identified lead and galvanized lines within 10 years. Property owners are required to maintain and replace any lead plumbing on their property, including lines extending from the meter.
