Passengers on an American Airlines flight from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport faced a roughly 90-minute delay on Sunday after the pilots found themselves locked out of the cockpit.
The incident occurred on American Airlines Flight 2140 as boarding got underway for the trip to Monterey Regional Airport in California. Passengers already on the jet bridge received instructions to return to the gate while maintenance crews addressed the issue.
According to passenger accounts, the captain informed those on the jet bridge that the cockpit door had latched shut with no one inside the flight deck. A maintenance technician climbed onto the nose of the Boeing 737 and entered through a side cockpit window to open the door from inside.
Once inside, crews determined the latch had simply gotten stuck. Technicians re-lubricated the mechanism before boarding resumed. One pilot later joked with passengers that the team had “lubed it up real good,” passengers reported.
The flight, originally scheduled to depart at 10:15 a.m., left roughly 90 minutes late, according to flight tracking data. No injuries were reported, and the aircraft continued to Monterey Regional Airport.
