A woman was wounded early Tuesday when a fireworks dispute in South Dallas erupted into a drive-by exchange of gunfire that left more than 60 shell casings on the street, police said.
Officers were called to the 4600 block of South Malcolm X Boulevard, near a 24-Hour Food Mart, around 1:40 a.m., according to details reported by Fox 4 KDFW.
Investigators said a group of teenagers and young adults had gathered to light fireworks when a verbal argument broke out, and a firearm was allegedly discharged by accident.
The suspects left the area but returned minutes later in a white SUV and opened fire on the crowd as they drove past, officials said. People in the crowd fired back, and a woman was struck in the leg, according to police.
The suspects fled in the white SUV and remain at large. No arrests have been announced.
Crime scene investigators shut down the roadway for several hours while collecting more than five dozen shell casings from the pavement.
