A big rig truck overturned on I-30 in Dallas on Monday morning, spilling 30,000 pounds of eggs out over the freeway.
The accident occurred at around 3:50 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-30, near the exit for the I-45/US 75 interchange.
An 18-wheeler hauling a trailer full of chicken eggs veered off the road, smashed through a guard rail, and struck a highway bridge support.
The crash ripped open the trailer and unleashed 30,000 pounds of eggs onto the roadway. Gasoline also leaked out from the wreckage onto the road.
Luckily for the driver, they did not sustain any significant injury, but all lanes on the I-30, in both directions, had to be shut down for cleanup.
Police directed motorists to the I-45 exit as cleanup crews worked at the crash site. It took several hours clearing 1.5 miles of road before the freeway could be opened back up late in the afternoon.
Reporting for WFAA, Susanne Brenner observed that it was Eggland’s Best eggs littered all over the road.
She contacted the company and learned that the eggs were on their way to a distribution center and that their total value could have been as high as $90,000.
The Eggland’s Best spokesperson also assured her that the crash would not result in any supply chain issues and that the company would expedite a replacement load for what was lost.
Law enforcement is currently investigating the cause of the crash, which remains unknown.
Additionally, officials from the Texas Department of Transportation will be inspecting any damage sustained by the highway bridge support hit by the truck.
While the driver in this incident escaped with his life, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, which regulates commercial motor vehicles, published years of data indicating a significant and consistent rise in injurious and fatal accidents involving large trucks and buses.
