On January 28, Royse City Police arrested and charged a 14-year-old Royse City high schooler with Possession of a Firearm in a Prohibited Place (a third-degree felony) after the student allegedly brought a loaded 9-millimeter pistol to school.

Upon receiving reports of the teenager having the concealed gun within a backpack, the student was detained without incident by its school resource officer and other officers.

Although the handgun and the backpack were not on the person of the student upon detention, both the 9mm and the backpack were located and secured in a school office.

Law enforcement subsequently released this statement: “The Royse City Police Department is thankful for the individuals who came forward and reported this serious situation to the school administrators. We are also thankful to the Royse City Independent School District officials for their continued cooperation with law enforcement when it comes to all matters related to the safety and security of everyone on their campuses.”

An investigation is ongoing.
