A Meta employee left a highly confidential VR headset, a Project Cambria VR headset — known as a Meta Quest Pro, in a hotel room, where a hotel worker found it.
After discovering the device, Ramiro Cardenas posted images of the VR headset in a Facebook group called Oculus Quest 2.
Cardenas also posted an unboxing video of the VR headset, which later revealed that it has five external cameras that are utilized by the headset. The controllers used by the headset use onboard cameras instead of tracking rings, which are also found on the Oculus Quest 2 controllers.
The packaging label of the VR headset clearly states that the headset is not for resale; it is an engineering sample carrying the branding of Meta Quest Pro. This indicates that the VR headset was likely confidential and naturally not meant to be left unattended in a hotel room, let alone leaked online through photos and video coverage.
In a later post, it was confirmed that the VR headset also includes a charging dock and is now retrieved by its respective owner.
However, employees and other individuals have left confidential prototypes in public places before.
For instance, an iPhone 4 prototype was left in a bar and eventually handed over to Gizmodo. The man behind the incident came forward years later, posting his narrative of what had happened to Reddit.
A more recent incident involved a Google Pixel watch prototype left in a restaurant somewhere in the United States in April 2022. Android Central published images of the device, which had labels indicating it was for “internal testing and development only.” It was not confirmed who left the watch prototype in the restaurant.
