United Airlines has partnered with SpaceX’s Starlink to enhance in-flight connectivity across its fleet.
Testing of the satellite-based internet service is set to begin in February 2025, with the first commercial flight equipped with the Elon Musk-run Starlink Wi-Fi expected by spring 2025, Reuters reported.
The airline plans to outfit its entire two-cabin regional fleet with Starlink in the spring of 2025 and aims to have its first mainline aircraft equipped with the service by year’s end. Ultimately, United intends to provide Starlink Wi-Fi on all its flights, offering free access to MileagePlus members, according to the Verge.
This collaboration is part of United’s broader strategy to improve passenger experience by providing faster and more reliable internet connectivity during flights. Starlink’s low Earth orbit satellite network is designed to deliver high-speed, low-latency internet access, enabling passengers to stream content, browse the web, and engage in real-time online activities seamlessly while in the air, the Wall Street Journal noted.
By integrating Starlink’s technology, United Airlines aims to set a new standard for in-flight Wi-Fi services, enhancing overall customer satisfaction and potentially attracting new partnerships and benefits for its loyalty program members.
“We have a lot planned for our MileagePlus members this year and adding Starlink to as many planes as we can – as quickly as we can – is at the center of it all,” Richard Nunn, CEO of United MileagePlus, said in a statement, according to FOX Business. “It’s not only going to revolutionize the experience of flying United, but it’s also going to unlock tons of new partnerships and benefits for our members that otherwise wouldn’t be possible.”
