Tom Thumb is set to expand its presence in North Texas, breaking ground on three sites in the Metroplex this week.

On November 20, Tom Thumb, a supermarket chain part of Albertsons Cos., will begin constructing three new stores in North Texas. The new locations in Sanger, Midlothian, and Sunnyvale are expected to start opening between the fall of 2024 and the spring of 2026.

Tom Thumb has opened two locations in 2024, in Frisco and Forney. Last year, as reported in The Dallas Express, City Council unanimously approved a $5.8 million tax incentive for the grocer to open a location in the Redbird neighborhood of Oak Cliff. City Council members praised the move at the time for helping address the lack of available grocery stores in parts of the city, a growing challenge with Dallas-Fort Worth’s expanding population.

Last year, DFW’s population stood at just over 7.8 million. By 2028, it’s anticipated to jump 9% to nearly 8.5 million residents.

“We are thrilled to be breaking ground in three communities on the same day for the first time in our 76-year history… North Texas is experiencing tremendous growth and Tom Thumb, D-FWs grocer since 1948, is committed to growing along with it,” Tom Thumb president Wes Jackson said in a statement, per DMN.

Tom Thumb’s parent company, Albertsons, continues to seek a nearly $25 billion merger with Kroger, an initiative in the works since October 2022.

The first of the three new grocers is a 50,000-square-foot store in Sanger, north of Denton, at 1421 W. Chapman Drive, set to open in the fall of 2025. The location will include an in-store Starbucks and a drive-through pharmacy.

A Sunnyvale location at 3400 N. Belt Line Road between Mesquite and Forney is also expected to open next fall. This store will be slightly bigger at 59,000 square feet and also feature a Starbucks.

The final spot in Midlothian in the south of the Metroplex will come a bit later in the spring of 2026. This location, at the northeast corner of MD1387 and North Walnut Grover Road, will be the same size as the Sunnyvale site and will come with a pharmacy and a Starbucks.
