The General Motors plant in Arlington posted a 70-year record for monthly production in March.
GM Arlington manufactures the automaker’s lineup of full-size SUV models, including the GMC Yukon, Cadillac Escalade, Chevy Tahoe, and Chevy Suburban. The plant produced over 34,000 new vehicles in March, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.
This production number surpassed GM Arlington’s previous record of 33,767 units set in March 2017, according to GM Authority, and is the most vehicles produced in one month at the plant since it opened in 1954.
At 4.375 million square feet, the plant is massive, sitting on 250 acres.
The full-size SUVs produced there are among General Motors’ most popular and profitable models, per GM Authority. The plant exports these vehicles to over 30 countries and supplies GM dealers domestically.
“Our celebration of this milestone is not just about the number, it’s about the people who build consistent quality into every SUV that we produce,” said the plant’s executive director, John Urbanic, per GM Authority.
According to GM Authority, the GM Arlington plant had over 5,000 hourly workers and 400 salaried workers as of 2021.
“Challenges, such as supply disruptions, are overcome by the team on a daily and hourly basis,” Urbanic noted.
As previously reported by The Dallas Express, GM regained its title as the world’s largest automaker this year, surpassing Toyota in sales in 2022.
GM sold over 600,000 units between Buick, Cadillac, Chevy, and GMC in the fourth quarter of 2022, according to GM Authority, an increase of 18%.
“GM led the U.S. industry in total sales and delivered the largest year-over-year increase in market share of any OEM,” GM CEO Mary Barra said on the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call in January.
GM CFO Paul Jacobson attributed the sales growth to “the team overcoming numerous logistics challenges and collaborating with the supply chain to increase parts availability.”
